Meet the Veterinarian
Dr. Janith Gunasekera graduated from Faculty of Veterinary Medicine and Animal Science, the only faculty for veterinary education in Sri Lanka, in 1995. He obtained a second class honors degree in Bachelor of Veterinary Science and completed the internship program at the government veterinary office in Udahamulla in the Colombo District, and at the government veterinary office in Kalutara District for a period of six months. He has gained experience in Disease diagnosis and treatment in farm animals during this period as well. Immediately after the internship he built up his own practice and now has been in the practice for over twenty years. Due to the interaction with clients for nearly four years, he realized the importance of studying psychology and followed a Post Graduate Diploma in Psychology at the Faculty of Graduate Studies, University of Colombo for period of one and half years. He was awarded the diploma in March, 2001 with a merit pass.
To transfer the new knowledge to clients and others he has authored a publication titled, “Caring a Dog” in both English and Sinhala languages. He has further contributed his scientific knowledge by making many presentations at scientific forums. Dr. Janith served in the editorial committee of the prestigious journal, “The Sri Lanka Veterinary Journal” which is renowned internationally for well over 50 years of publications. He was a founder member of the Society of Companion Animal Practitioners of Sri Lanka, The Society of Companion Animal Welfare and has served as the President, Secretary, treasurer and a committee member. Dr. Janith featured in the popular TV educational program “Nugasevana” on Rupavahini on caring for companion animals which was very popular among pet owners during that time and also had featured on “Derana TV’.
Dr. Janith has also served as a visiting lecturer to the veterinary Clinical Department and Veterinary Teaching Hospital of Faculty of Veterinary Medicine and Animal Science of University of Peradeniya. He also obtained a Master of Science Degree in Veterinary Epidemiology and Public Health from the prestigious Royal Veterinary College (Ranked 1st in the World) of University of London, UK in 2013. He was offered the membership of newly formed Sri Lanka College of Veterinary Surgeons in 2016 and also a Founder member of the College. He commenced his formal studies at Royal College, Colombo and completed his higher studies at Royal Veterinary College, London. Dr. Janith is hopeful that all animal lovers would undertake responsible animal ownership and provide welfare measures to all animals.
He spend his leisure time reading, teaching Buddhist Philosophy and also learning and practicing alternative medicine. He is also a qualified Thai Traditional Massage Therapist
